(part 1)
Byzantine "kratemata" and music compositions from the Ottoma Court of Istanbul
Countless are the paths that guide you to the Divine, I’ve chosen music and dance. Mevlana Jalal ad- Din Rumi Searching the meaningful relationship between compositions composed by the chanters of “Fanari” and the composers of Istanbul’s Ottoman Court, we create a “mosaic” of the musical landscape from 17th to 19th century in Istanbul. We can discover this relationship in theory as long as in interpretive approach and we do perform according to nowadays’ aesthetic. The two musicians perform regularly as a duetto or as members of wider ensembles that are specialized in Eastern music and especially in Istanbul’s musical tradition. Both of these women are Greeks of “diaspora” (migrated): Katerina Fotinaki, singer, songwriter and guitarist has lived in France for eleven years. Evi Filippou studied classical percussion and has lived in Berlin for six years. They met in 2014 in Music Village of Agios Lavrentios occasioned by rhythm matters. Since then, they have worked in great Festivals, in different cities in France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Greece, as a duet or as a trio, with other artist.

“FF” means Fotinaki – Filippou, but also means “Fortissimo” in music notation. The result of this partnership is two dynamic musicians – performers who chase persistently rhythm, accuracy and the required freedom required for a forceful and absolutely unpredictable program. The repertoire includes songs of Katerina Fotinaki who combines poetry and music in a very remarkable way (A’ Music Composition Award, 2011) but also presents some noticeable covers of famous or unknown melodies (traditional melodies, Manos Chatzidakis’ music, medieval songs, punk song etc).
