‘’Lakis Mouratides a bold ,restless many-sided artist , has been serving Art for forty consecutive years with passion and consistency . All these years resulted in a mature multifaceted and multileveled work making him emerge among the most significant artists of his generation not only in his motherland but also in Europe.’’ Magda Koubarellou (Art Historian) Talented since his college years when he studied topography(1968-1972),interior and exterior decoration he started a journey along which he managed to combine Art with his professional occupation bringing Art to technocratic business such as designing of building façade and lightning with his artistic neon lighting modelling made him well known over the last 35 years of work creating and working in Greece and in Europe (1976-2010). Mostly influenced by Dadaism he alters the characters and the sense of using various objects being illustrated in his works . Houmor along with sarcasm are being constitutive elements diffusing his works. Complex structures, strictly organised are one of his paintings traits due to deep knowledge of engineering as well as of architectural drawing. Complete anarchy in colors is dominating. The titles are always poetic and ironic in meaning. The crates he ‘s been drawing on are of his own patent. The surrealism he’s been taking is self- refuting in a sense as he re-alters the transcendental to factual. Therefore his works seems as if you have already embraced it aesthetically .
1971 the kick-off year for the artist , when after he wins his first prize in a portraiture competition with coal. (ABC School-Vacalo) he rings the bell actually for a series of painting exhibitions during his early years in various galleries in Thessaloniki . In 1972 in “Spiliotopouloi Bros” Gallery in Thessaloniki, 1973 “Idees” Gallery in Thessaloniki,1975 paintings exhibition in Kohlias (K.Laha) Gallery in Thessaloniki. In 2004 he exhibits a series of paintings on the central subject of “MOTO ’’ in the cultural centre “Metaxourgeion” a renovated old silk factory where at the same time he interferes with 3 old machines transitioning them in 3 contemporary installations. |
From 2007 onwards he keeps exhibiting annually in the Centre “Giorgiode Chirico” in Volos. In 2008 he represents the Activist German Painting Group “Mural-Global” in Greece . His business and cultural activities didn’t manage to turn him away from his big love for painting since his childhood though with his ‘’weird drawings’’ a field where the artist has to present a large and significant work characterised by a very particular and personal element empowered over time in knowledge and technical skills coming up in the end mellow and strengthened , a heritage granted by the time and the daily toil of an artist.
In his painting, Lakis Mouratidis has been using elements referring us at a first glimpse to the Surrealists; however he had built up a very personal painting style with intense emergences and divings in the subconscious as in the conscious world ,especially in the world of 'Being' as the artist himself determines it.
In 2010 he is exhibiting for the first time beyond the Greek borders with the first demonstration occurring in a very dynamic kinetic way meant on Dusseldorf’s trams moving along the city .Thereafter the painter had been requested across various German Exhibition Halls in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Munich.
In October, 2013 an assembly of his works including installations, sculptures and paintings was presented under the title of “Evanescent dialects’’ at the Institution of Greek Culture in Berlin (member of Berlin Art Academy ).
In December 2013 all the works were transferred in the Exhibition Hall of the B&O (Bang & Olufsen) Company at the centre of the old city in Düsseldorf . The exhibition currently being in Germany is to be presented in Munich and Cologne.
Having been characterized as the “New-Surrealist” by the Berlin art press Lakis Mouratidis stands out by differentiating himself from the contemporary and old-fashioned trends due to introducing with pioneering imaginativeness a new painting horizon.
In August 2015 he participates to the 4th URBAN ART FESTIVAL in Dusseldorf where he compiled a mural painting along with an installation of 7,20X2,90 m , ending up being the sole creation drawing the honest attention among other works in the same place . With this occasion it worth mentioning that all the way through his way in Art Lakis Mouratidis works for the generation of big add-ons onto the city’s “tissue” such as murals in combination with installations of big size.
Currently he is painting for his new exhibition.
